New Made for iPhone Duo

Open it to slate.
Shut it to clap.

A film slate that folds like the real thing. Hold your iPhone Duo half open to the lens and shut it: the clap sounds the instant the halves meet, the take is logged with its timecode, and the next one waits on the cover.

01 iPhone Duo

A clapperboard has always been two halves that meet.

Now your phone is too. The slate on the inside, the next take on the cover, and the hinge where the sticks come together.

1

Half open, it’s the slate.

Production, timecode and the top stick on the raised half; roll, scene, take and director on the board below. The sticks meet right on the crease.

The cover screen after a clap: scene 23B take 4 logged, next take 5, with Circle, NG and Undo

2

Shut, it claps.

The clap sounds the instant the halves meet and the take is logged. The cover shows the take you just shot and the next one, with Circle, NG and Undo, so you never open it between takes.

3

Flat, it’s two pages.

Lay it open on the cart: the slate on one page, the shot log on the other, every take listed under its scene.

02 Sync

Lands on one frame.

Slate apps that beep and flash for half a second leave you guessing which frame to sync to. Clap’s flash lasts exactly one frame at your frame rate, then it’s gone. No fade.

One-frame flash
Or two, or none. Counted in frames the screen actually shows.
23.976 to 60 fps
Time-of-day timecode in LED digits that freezes on the clap.
Clap or beep
A sharp clap, or a 1 kHz tone one frame long that any mic picks up.
Sticks on the frame
They snap shut with the sound, then the board holds two seconds to read in the shot.
Bluetooth warning
Wireless audio plays late. The slate tells you before it costs you a take.
The hinge, on Duo
The halves meeting are the picture’s mark, just like a wooden clapper.

03 Shot log

Every take, logged.

Each clap goes in the log with its timecode. Circle the keepers, mark the NGs, note the lens or the boom in shot.

  1. Grouped by scene. 23, 23A, 23B, skipping I and O, back to take 1 in a tap.
  2. A production at a time. Start a new one and the last waits with its own slate and log.
  3. A camera report to send. A PDF that reads well in Mail and Messages, or a CSV for the editor.

04 Any iPhone

No Duo? Tap the sticks.

On every other iPhone, Clap is a classic clapper: tap the sticks and they snap shut with the sound and a one-frame flash. Held sideways, the sticks and timecode sit beside the board.

05 Left off the slate

Nothing between you and the take.

Accounts

Ads
Not one. Not anywhere.

Your takes stay on your phone.

How do I clap on iPhone Duo?

Open the phone to the slate, then shut it. The clap sounds the instant the halves meet, the take is logged with its timecode, and the next take is ready on the cover. Shut it slowly for soft sticks, a quieter clap. Opening the phone only slightly and shutting it again doesn’t count as a take.

How do I clap on other iPhones?

Tap the black and white sticks at the top of the slate.

I don’t hear the clap.

Turn the volume up; the slate shows “Volume low” when it’s quiet. Clap plays even with the ring switch on silent. If MOS is on, claps are silent on purpose: turn MOS off in the slate settings or on the cover.

Is the clap accurate enough to sync?

Yes. The sound and a white flash start together, and the flash lasts exactly one frame at the slate’s frame rate, then goes off with no fade, so there’s one frame to line up. The sticks snap shut on that frame too. You can choose a clap or a 1 kHz beep, and a flash of one frame, two frames or none, under Sync in the slate settings. Use the phone’s speaker: Bluetooth plays sound late, and the slate warns you when it’s on. On iPhone Duo the halves meeting are the picture’s sync mark, just like a wooden clapper.

How do I fix a mistake?

On the cover, Undo takes back the last clap. In the shot log, tap a take to change its mark or note, or swipe it to delete it.

How do I add a note to a take?

Tap the take in the shot log, or tap Add note on the cover right after the clap. Notes are in the camera report and the CSV.

How do I go back to take 1?

Open the slate settings and tap Back to take 1.

Can I keep more than one production?

Yes. Tap Start a new production in the slate settings: the new one starts at scene 1, take 1, and the last one is kept under Productions with its slate and shot log. Tap it there to pick it up where you left off. Two productions can share a name without mixing, and deleting one leaves the others alone.

How do I get the shot log to my editor?

Open the shot log and tap Export. Camera report sends a PDF that reads well in Mail and Messages; Spreadsheet sends a CSV that opens in Numbers, Excel or Google Sheets.

What is a tail slate?

A slate at the end of a take instead of the start. Turn on Tail slate in the slate settings, or Tail on iPhone Duo’s cover, and the board shows upside down for the next clap, the way crews mark them. It stays upside down while the clap holds, then turns back.

Where is my data?

Only on your phone. Clap has no account and sends nothing anywhere. Deleting the app deletes the slate and the log, so export the log first if you need it.
